Kilwins was founded in 1947 by husband and wife Don and Katy Kilwin, who had a passion for making premium sweets and bringing joy to their customers. Their first shop started on the smaller side, selling baked goods, before expanding into the Kilwins we know today. We’re excited to bring our handcrafted desserts from our first home in Petoskey, Michigan, to St. Joseph and beyond.

The Kilwins Process

Many of our products come straight from Don and Katy Kilwin. For decades, many of these recipes have remained unchanged, which only speaks to our commitment to upholding the Kilwins family tradition. Some of our candy-making equipment is still going strong to this day, dating back to the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. We have incorporated some modern equipment and technology over the years, but we’re proud of our heritage equipment—made when quality mattered most. 

Here at Kilwins, we oversee all stages of the candy-making process in our very own kitchen to ensure no room for error. For example, we invested in special climate-controlled trucks that allow us to maintain our ice cream at the perfect temperature in transport. Kilwins values quality over quantity, so we stay committed to handcrafting every piece of chocolate to maintain the integrity and richness of each product.

Kilwins offers a wide range of unique products, and we don’t put anything out there that isn’t perfect. Speaking of perfect, we created the perfect caramel apple. That’s right! Made with Granny Smith apples and coated with smooth, creamy caramel, Kilwins caramel apples are a crowd favorite.

Here at Kilwins, we also make our special Heritage Chocolate, which is no ordinary chocolate. Our Heritage Chocolates provide a very unique flavor profile that you can only get at Kilwins. It comes in milk, white, and dark chocolate varieties, with hints of caramel, vanilla, or spice, respectively. You can get this chocolate by the bar, in bark, or in a bag, which comes with many bars for you to share with friends and family.

To buy Mackinac Island Fudge without traveling to Mackinac Island in Lake Huron, look no further than Kilwins. Our fudge recipe is based on the original one created by founder Don Kilwin when he bought a marble table back in 1947. We still use marble tables and copper kettles to make Mackinac Island Fudge, pushing and pulling it by hand. Ask for a sample to determine your favorite flavor.
