Kilwins first began in 1947 when our founders, Don and Katy Kilwin, developed the perfect chocolate recipe. Soon, they opened up their first store in Petoskey, MI with the goal of spreading joy and good candy. What began as a passion project turned into a national phenomenon. 

Kilwins released new recipes as they perfected them. The selection at Kilwins grew to include chewy caramels, crunchy nut brittles, and rich chocolate fudge. Eventually, it wasn’t just the candy selection that grew—our number of stores grew, too. 

Although we’ve grown so much, our goal is still the same: to serve the best confections to our friends and neighbors. To make this happen, we’ve decided to stay loyal to the basics.

Our Heritage Chocolate and signature caramel are based on original recipes. Our Mackinac Island Fudge is hand-paddled on marble countertops and our caramel corn is made using authentic copper kettles. Many of our candies are still made by hand not because it’s more efficient, but because that’s what it takes to create truly superior sweets.

We first developed our Original Recipe Ice Cream in 1985 as a way to experiment with adding new sweets to our shelves. The ice cream was such a hit that we decided to keep it for good.

As the name suggests, our Original Recipe Ice Cream reflects the recipe we created 40 years ago. We’ve since expanded our selection, offering a variety of classic and limited-edition flavors at our Midland Commons chocolate store.

All of our ice cream flavors are made with premium ingredients and they’re all kosher-certified. Beyond our high-quality ingredients, our ice cream is kept fresh with our temperature-controlled transport trucks.
