Kilwins was founded in 1947 when our founders, Don and Katy Kilwin, created the perfect chocolate recipe. Eager to share their candy with their community, they opened up the first Kilwins in Petoskey, MI. Now, we have stores in many states, including our Chicago River North chocolate store.
Since we began, our goal has been simple: to craft the highest quality confections for our treasured guests. There’s a certain, undeniable joy that comes with each bite of chocolate, and our mission is to share that happiness with everyone who visits our store.
Our Heritage Chocolate is based on a proprietary recipe our founders created over 75 years ago, and our Original Recipe Ice Cream reflects the 1985 recipe. Some products are even made using our original equipment. For instance, our hand-dropped caramels are made in copper kettles that predate World War II.

Our Original Recipe Ice Cream was born in 1985. The ice cream was such a hit that we knew it needed a permanent place in every store.
Each flavor is made with premium ingredients. Some of the toppings are handcrafted at Kilwins’ chocolate kitchen, such as our hot fudge and caramel. Additionally, all of our flavors are kosher-certified.
Once the ice cream is made, we ship it to our Chicago River North ice cream store in our very own temperature-controlled transport trucks. The ice cream itself is packed in containers that we designed specifically to preserve the crisp flavors and smooth texture.
